Morning Maths Meeting

Morning Maths Meeting

EXCITEMENT • PRACTICE • CONFIDENCE

Morning Maths meeting focuses on developing wider and stronger aspects of number sense whilst at the same time allowing revision and honing of basic skills, concepts and knowledge to support numerate behaviour across the whole mathematics curriculum. This helps to underpin the deeper key themes explored during the daily mathematics lesson.

“We have really noticed a big increase in maths attitude and confidence for the class that did it almost every day.”

WHAT IS MORNING MATHS MEETING?

Morning Maths Meeting (MMM) is a short 15-20 minute (10 minutes in EYFS) meeting between the class teacher and children, which takes place daily throughout the school year in addition to the lesson and serves a different purpose.

It focuses on developing wider and stronger aspects of number sense whilst at the same time allowing revision and honing of basic skills, concepts and knowledge to support numerate behaviour across the whole mathematics curriculum. This helps to underpin the deeper key themes explored during the daily mathematics lesson.

The key purpose of MMM is to develop fluency and confidence with the skills and conceptual understanding of number, the number system and the calculation routines of learners, relevant to their year group. It aims to develop number sense, estimation skills and flexibility in thinking and the application of mathematical ideas and procedures.

HOW IS THIS ACHIEVED?

This is achieved in the following way:

  • The focus is on enjoyment – activities should be fun and as far as possible, playful.
  • It provides for lots of repetition and rehearsal of basic number work but in a fun and lively way.
  • There is a basic structured routine which follows a similar format every day. The variation comes from the type of activities used which provide practice in a number of different skills.
  • Learning is facilitated through mathematical conversations between children, as well as with the class teacher. Some jottings or writing can take place but only to support the thinking process.
  • Short time-limited activities help to build up fluency in calculations over time.
  • Activities last between 1 and 3 minutes and are conducted at a brisk pace.
  • Where possible activities are tailored to suit pupil /class events and / or interests.
  • Activities can include songs, guessing games and rhymes.
  • The class works together as one, regardless of ability or attainment. Activities are designed so that children can answer on a number of levels.
  • Developing a feeling of ‘awe and wonder’ about mathematics is integral to the philosophy of the MMM.
  • The session is led by the class teacher.
  • Establishing a non-threatening atmosphere where children are willing to share their ideas and discuss misconceptions is integral to the rationale of MMM. Suitable tasks for this purpose are those that can have a number of different answers or can be solved through several methods.

“The surprising thing is the assessment we got

out of it because we did not go in thinking we were going to gain any assessment information … but in the end we learned a lot about children’s performance which was very valuable and especially for the reasoning aspects.”

“The children have more

opportunities to express their

mathematical reasoning and this

has developed talk within

maths lessons. Mathematical vocabulary

is being used more as a result of this.”

WHAT DOES IT COST?

Individual schools:

  • for the individual schools we use a ‘base’ cost of £650 per day or approximately £125 per hour to build our individually priced packages

  • for larger training and support packages (5 days or more) the unit cost decreases and they become more cost-effective

  • groups/clusters of schools can share the costs of collective training and the hosting school can benefit from free places at the training

Groups and clusters:

These half day sessions will run from 12.30 to 4pm with costs as follows (minimum of 10 delegates per session):

  • Single delegate cost = £165
  • 2 delegates from the same school = £250
  • 3 delegates from the same school = £325

As these are intended to be local events, we are looking for schools to host one of these events which other primary schools in the local area could attend. Schools who are willing to host an event would be given 2 free places at the training. If you would like to discuss this possibility, or would like to talk to us about the events please get in touch by e-mail on info@n2mp.org.uk.
